Published 25th July 2014

A Civic Reception is planned for Oldbury born Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Jodie Stimpson.

Special 'Goldbury' signs marking Jodie's momentous success are also planned for the town, Leader of Sandwell Council Darren Cooper has revealed.

Team England's Jodie won the first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday (24 July).

"We are so proud of Jodie and want to do our bit to make sure her fantastic achievement is recognised," Councillor Cooper said.

"We want to hold a Civic Reception for Jodie on her return from The Games and are looking at having special signs put up around Oldbury - 'or Goldbury' - paying tribute to our brilliant gold medallist."

Jodie joined Oldbury Swimming and Triathlon Club at a young age, training at Langley Swimming Centre. As a young elite athlete, she was part of Sandwell's Triple S Gifted and Talented Programme. She also carried the Olympic Torch for London 2012.
