Safer 6 campaign launches

Safer 6 is back – six weeks of intensive action across Sandwell's six towns to help keep the borough safe and clean.
The campaign starts today (Monday 15 October) and runs until November 25
2012. It follows the success of Safer 6 campaigns in 2010 and 2011.
Joining forces are the council, police, fire service, Sandwell Homes, probation, health and transport services, schools, HM Revenue & Customs, Serco, Tipton Litterwatch, the Safer Travel Partnership and many more.
They will work with the community to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and clean up 'grot spots' and promote crime prevention and community safety.
The campaign also ties in with Alcohol Awareness Week (19 to 25 November) which has the theme "It's time to talk about drinking". The week will include an event on Wednesday 21 November, 9am to 5.30pm, at Queen's Square shopping centre, West Bromwich, to raise awareness of alcohol issues and services.
And the Sandwell Youth Bus will also be out and about across the borough, with the council's young people's services and partners providing activities and safety advice for young people.
Organisations work closely together day in, day out throughout the year to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Ian Jones, Sandwell Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: "With darker nights and the annual fireworks and bonfire season, these six weeks are a time when we need to put in extra efforts beyond our day-to-day work to keep our streets safe and clean."
Superintendent Bas Javid, of Sandwell Police, said: "The Safer 6 campaign is all about organisations working together to target their efforts and provide additional reassurance at a time of year when crime and anti-social behaviour can often rise.
"It will build on the success of last year's campaign and will also show to everyone how we are all working together to keep our communities safe."
