Big read winners announced

After months of reading and voting, The BIG Sandwell READ has reached an end and has finally confirmed the winning books.

'Matilda' by Roald Dahl was voted favourite book for children and young people in The Big Sandwell Read 2012 with 'War Horse' by Michael Morpurgo as the runner up.

The favourite book for adults was 'The Help' written by Kathryn Stockett with 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini as a close second.

The Big Read included 12 adults and 12 children's books for people over the borough to read and to decided on there favourite book from the options given.

Titles such as A Thousand Splendid Suns, 61 Hours, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again!  Were included in the event

 The children/teenagers books included the works of Jacqueline Wilson through to Roald Dahl and many other popular children's book writers

 The adults had a diverse collection of books to read such as novels written by Lee Childs and Emma Donoghue

 All the books included in the event are available to borrow for free from the local Sandwell libraries and a list of the books as well as a brief overview of the book are all featured on the Sandwell Council website http://www.sandwell.gov.uk/bigread

 The event was to encourage people in Sandwell to get involved with books and enjoy reading as well as using the local library.

 Cabinet member for leisure services Councillor Linda Horton said: "Reading is a wonderful pastime and our libraries have something for everyone - whether you are young or old."
