A new Red Route scheme designed to ease traffic congestion and improve traffic flow along key roads in West Bromwich and Oldbury will become fully operational next week.

And football fans are being reminded  that if they park on the Red Route near the West Bromwich Albion ground on match days after this weekend's game against Everton, they will face a fine.

Although the new Red Route became operational on August 16, so far drivers who park on the double red lines have not been fined, but just issued with an advisory notice.

But from Monday, September 3, the route will become fully enforcable.

The roads affected by the new Red Route scheme are: Kenrick Way, Telford Way, Trinity Way, Kelvin Way, Bromford Road, Oldbury Ringway and Churchbridge.

There is clearly designated areas for parking and loading along these roads, including provision for parking on West Bromwich Albion match days.

Cabinet member for neighbourhood services Councillor Ian Jones said: "This has been designed to ease traffic congestion, improve traffic flow and make better provision for legal parking.

"There is now extra parking available on Albion match days in Lewishham Park off Dartmouth Road, which is in easy walking distance of the ground.

"These improvements will make life easier for many roads users and above all, safer for pedestrians.

"There has been extensive public consultation over the routes and we have listened to what people have said," he added.

The Red Route will initially be in force for 18 months. The council will then decide if any changes are needed before making the order permanent.

The scheme will also include the following traffic signal improvements which will be constructed over the Summer:

  • New traffic signal technology willl be installed at the junction of Trinity Way and High Street to improve the operation of the junction. This will include better pedestrian crossing facilities

  • New traffic signal technology will also be installed at four pedestrian crossings on Trinity Way, Oldbury Ringway and Churchbridge
