Sandwell trader register is changing
Published on 8th August 2012
Sandwell Trading Standards Trader Register which was set up to help stop residents from being 'ripped off' is going from strength to strength.
In the last twelve months 16,302 searches have been carried out by consumers and is on target for over 18,000 searches in 2012/13.
This year has seen the launch of a new logo and website address http://www.tradewellinsandwell.com/
The register was established to protect older and more vulnerable adults who are at risk from rogue traders who approach them in their homes selling such services as home improvements and repairs.
They can also find it difficult to identify and engage competent and reliable tradesmen.
The scheme also supports honest traders by driving those less scrupulous traders from the market and providing an environment in which they can advertise their businesses effectively.
Last year, a membership fee was introduced for the first time with the aim of using any income to support and promote the scheme.
Sandwell Trading Standards Manager Bob Charnley said: "Although the scheme has been a tremendous success it is important that we don't stand still.
"We can now give a commitment to members of the scheme about what we will do with the income generated from membership fees."
Other improvements planned for 2012 are:
- An annual trader of the year award. Awarded to the trader that has given exceptional customer service
- A prize draw from customers completing feedback every 6 months worth £50
- Blank business cards for members with the schemes logo on
- Tradewell Van Stickers, and
- The addition of a range of new promotional material.
Sandwell Council's cabinet member for neighbourhood services Councilor Ian Jones said: "The scheme has been a great success, introducing a membership fee has meant that we can continue to improve the scheme for businesses while continuing the same level of protection for consumers."
Ron Drysdale who is a member of the register said; 'I have been a member of Sandwell Trader Register since its introduction. Over the years I have received numerous enquires as a result and I estimate the value of work completed by my business be in excess of £12,0000."
