Keith is Sandwell's new mayor

Stalwart councillor Keith Davies is Sandwell's new mayor – taking over as the borough's top citizen from Councillor Joyce Underhill.

A delighted Councillor Davies, who represents the Smethwick ward, said: "I want to give my sincere thanks to my fellow members of the council for electing me mayor for the forthcoming year.

"I shall endeavour to represent the people of the borough and to make myself available to support the many events and organisations in the borough during my year of office.

"This is a real honour which Sandwell Council has bestowed on me and through me to the people of Smethwick whom I have had the opportunity to represent for more than 21 years."

Fellow Smethwick councillor Vic Silvester is the borough's new deputy mayor with Mrs Carole Silvester as deputy mayoress.

The mayor's chosen charities for the next year are Help for Heroes and Different Strokes, which is based at Sandwell Hospital.
