Kind-hearted staff and customers at Sandwell libraries have raised a phenomenal £3,400 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Loading...They chose Macmillan as their charity of the year 2011 and staff across each of the 19 libraries took part in a variety of fundraising initiatives, including an innovative sponsored step challenge.

Library visitors were challenged to guess the numbers of steps a library staff member does in a day. The total number of steps walked by library staff on 24 October was an amazing 162,360, averaging 8,000 steps a day to assist customers.

Other events included taking part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning event, when marathon hero Blind Dave Heeley officially launched the fundraising campaign. Library staff have also held hamper raffles.

Money raised from their fundraising will be used to help local people who are affected by cancer.

Macmillan Cancer Support aims to provide practical, financial, emotional and medical help to people across Sandwell.

Eloise Davidson, fundraising manager for the charity, visited the library to collect the cheque and said: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Sandwell libraries for their generous donation.

"We couldn't continue our vital work without the support of people like them and this money will go a long way to help people who are often facing the biggest fight of their lives."

The cheque presentation was also attended by the Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Joyce Underhill who said: "What a fantastic amount of money raised! I am also amazed by the number of steps each librarian does on a daily basis and what a great way to raise sponsorship.

"It was a real pleasure to attend today and see what a difference they are making in the local community."

Lisa Bunn, community library manager, said: "We had an initial target of raising £2,000, so to raise over £3,000 is brilliant and is an illustration of the dedication and generosity of both staff and library customers to this worthwhile cause."
