School meals and milk
School milk
Milk is one essential part of a growing child's diet. It contains a wide range of essential nutrients; energy, protein and vitamins and is also a particularly valuable source of calcium - vital for strong teeth and bones.
Free milk for under fives
Each child under the age of five attending a Sandwell school is entitled to a free carton (200ml) of fresh semi-skimmed pasteurised milk on each school day.
School milk prices
Many schools offer milk to pupils over the age of five for a relatively small charge. Please check with the school concerned if you are unsure of their milk policy.
The price of school milk for the Summer Term 2012 is:
Term
- Primary Schools - £6.80
- Secondary Schools - £7.30
Half Term
- Primary Schools - £3.40
- Secondary Schools - £3.65
Per Week
- Primary Schools - 55p
- Secondary Schools - 59p
School milk can be paid for by cash or cheque.
The price of school milk changes every term. This is because we calculate the price according to the number of days in the term. Like other foodstuffs, the cost of milk changes and this has an effect on the price we charge our customers.
Sandwell also claims subsidy on the milk from the Rural Payments Agency and the Welfare Food Reimbursement Unit. These organisations pay about 2½p towards every carton of milk your child drinks, making school milk excellent value for money!
