Safer and Sustainable Travel Team

School crossing patrol

Sandwell's Safer and Sustainable Travel Team provides 74 School Crossing Patrols across the Borough to ensure travel to and from school is as safe as possible.

As well as the permanent patrols, a team of mobile patrols are also employed to cover crossings which are either vacant or where the regular patrol is off sick.

The crossings are listed in priority according to the amount of speed of traffic passing the point and the number of children that use the crossing.

Mobile patrols are allocated to the highest priority points first.  This means that despite our best efforts we cannot always cover every point.

We maintain this service to a high standard and if a vacancy occurs at a specific crossing , we fully evaluate the location, using nationally agreed criteria, and will recruit if the crossing location meets the minimum accepted national standards.
