University Technical College
The demolition and clearance of the former Sandwell College campus on the High Street and its relocation to the new Central Campus on Spon Lane created a development opportunity for a new purpose built educational facility.
The lead sponsors of the UTC are the University of Wolverhampton and West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, who will work in partnership with a wide range of industry partners to ensure that significant opportunities exist for pupils of the UTC to progress to higher education or employment.
Planning permission was granted in April 2014, and construction work is now underway and is expected to be open by September 2015. The UTC represents £10 million of investment in the town, with funding from the Department for Education and will provide 5,390sqmtr of educational accommodation for 600 pupils aged between 14-19 years old, supported by up to 60 staff.
The three and four storey building will include teaching and support space; recreation facilities, specialist science laboratories and studios; simulation and skills suits, a mock hospital ward; a fitness gym and a multi-use games area at roof level. Some of these facilities will be accessible to members of the local community as part of supporting the health focus of the UTC.
