Taking on apprentices and employing young people
Are you a business interested in taking on an apprentice or employing staff?
The council's Employment and Skills team- Think Sandwell can provide a complete package of tailored support to guide you through the entire recruitment process at no cost to your company.
We will discuss your specific requirements with you and will assist in the preparation of job descriptions, vacancy advertisements and interviews.
Assisting first-time employers
There is a lot to think about when employing staff for the first time. Think Sandwell are on hand to help first-time employers make sure they have all the necessary details in place before taking on an employee.
The council may also be able to fund up to half of a young person’s wages for the first 12 months through the Sandwell Guarantee funding scheme
If you want to employ a young person or take on an apprentice using this funding then the position you offer them must:
- Be a new post - not replacing existing posts or staff
- Last for a minimum of 12 months
- Be an apprenticeship or, where there is no apprenticeship qualification suitable, offer training and development
- Meet National Minimum Wage requirements
- Be based at a business or organisation in Sandwell (or within reasonable travelling distance from Sandwell)

We’ll also give ongoing mentoring support for the young person at your place of work.
To get involved in the Sandwell Guarantee programme, you will be asked to sign a service level agreement that commits you to offering quality employment opportunities.
