Children's - Learning Services

What we do

The Learning Services Support Team

We provide business and project support across Learning and Inclusion Services; providing comprehensive administration support across Learning Services.

School Organisation and Development

We are part of Education Support Services and undertake the following areas of work:

  • School Place Planning
  • School Admissions
  • Education Benefits and Transport
  • Capital Programme / school expansion projects

Attendance & Prosecution Service

We support the council to fulfil its legal obligations under 1996 Education Act to ensure that pupils of compulsory school age attend school regularly or that they are in receipt of education otherwise than at school.

Parent Support Team - Learning Services

We are a small team of 4 who provide information, advice and training courses for Family Support Workers who are located in Schools, Children's Centres and the Community.   

Administration and support

You can learn how to:-

  • provide support and assistance to other members of the team where necessary
  • assist in the facilitation of meetings, events and workshops
  • produce documents and information using the appropriate computer software
  • coordinate diaries to support staff, making appointments as required
  • research information on behalf of the service area

School Organisation and Development

You can learn:-

  • the council forecasts pupil numbers and considers where pupil demand will be and whether there is a sufficient level of school places to meet this demand.
  • how and when school places are allocated, the timetable for admissions, how we link with other admission authorities and what the law says about admissions.
  • about the qualifying criteria for free school meals, how many children are eligible and how many children are entitled to travel assistance to get to school.
  • how a capital project such as a school expansion is managed from start to end and you will have an opportunity to see examples of where the council has expanded schools to accommodate more children.

Attendance & Prosecution Service (16+)

You can learn how to:-

  • carry out a range of administrative and business tasks to support service delivery
  • receive calls from service users and transfer to appropriate officers within the service
  • support officers as they carry out a wide range of service function

Parent Support Team

You can learn how to:-

  • receive and resolve telephone/email enquiries from our customers
  • produce distribution lists for different types of customers
  • assist with production of our 'Good to Know' newsletter
  • assist with entering data onto our databases
  • assist with the preparation of training materials/handouts for courses
  • assist with the organisation of training events e.g. room/refreshments bookings, attendance sheets, course packs, evaluations.
  • input data from training attendance/evaluation forms
  • assist with stock control of training resources
  • assist with the preparation/distribution of Parenting Programme Resources to our Family Support Workers via our Courier Service
  • understand the finance/communication systems that the Council uses
