Standards of conduct - appointment of an independent person

We are looking for someone who wants to promote and maintain high standards of conduct in public life.

The Council is required by the Localism Act 2011 to appoint Independent Person/s to assist the Council in promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct amongst its elected members and co-opted members. The Council can appoint up to five independent members to sit on its Standards Committee.

The Independent Person is consulted before the Council takes a decision on an allegation about a councillor which it has decided to investigate.  The Independent Person may also be consulted on other standards matters, including by a councillor who is subject to an allegation.

Relevant training will be provided and out of pocket expenses are payable.

You will need an interest in ethical standards in the public sector; independence of mind; be a confident communicator; and capable of dealing with complex issues.

To ensure the independence of the role, anyone who is or has within the last five years been a member, co-opted member or an officer of Sandwell Borough Council, or who is a relative or close friend of a member or co-opted member of the Council, is not eligible to apply.
