Sandwell Towns Fund

Get involved. We want your input!

Introduction

On 6 September 2019 it was announced that 101 towns had been identified by Government to benefit from the Towns Fund which comprises £3.6billion with up to £25million per town being available. The amount of funding allocated to each town will be based on a Town Deal agreed with Government.

West Bromwich, Smethwick, and Rowley Regis have been invited by the Government to create a Town Deal. This is a really exciting opportunity to bring investment into Sandwell.

The objective of the fund is to drive the economic regeneration in towns to deliver long term economic and productive growth through:
  • Urban regeneration, planning and land use
  • Skills and enterprise infrastructure
  • Connectivity
Urban regeneration, planning and land use - What does this mean?
Urban regeneration, planning and land use involves the redevelopment of the town and underutilised land.

With the help of partners and the community, we want to regenerate West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis to ensure the towns are thriving and create a better environment that is a great place to live and work. We want to achieve this by looking at the opportunities to utilise our local assets, deliver more housing, improve green spaces, commercial properties and improve the towns retail offer.

Skills and enterprise infrastructure - What does this mean?
The skills and enterprise infrastructure focuses on driving private sector investment and ensuring towns have the space to support skills and small business development.

We want to invest in our towns to support education, training and skills and create a social and creative environment. We want to look at how we can improve our education and skills offer by working with partners and local businesses.

Connectivity - What does this mean?
This theme covers two areas - physical and digital.

Physical
We want those who live and/ or work in West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis to be better physically connected. We want to ensure there are good transport links (train, bus, car) and look at improving the cycle and walking schemes.

Digital
We want residents, communities and businesses better digitally connected. We want to improve access to the internet through faster broadband speed, WIFI and mobile data. We want to ensure users have the digital skills and confidence to use digital devices and that accessibility meets the users needs.

Get Involved

A key part of the Town Deal is community engagement. We want you to get involved and share your views to help shape the Town Investment Plans for West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis.

Thank you for completing our Sandwell Town Deal Survey!

As part of our public consultation programme, we asked you to complete our Town Deal Survey to get your views and ideas. There were three surveys, one for each town - West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis.

The phase one survey, which closed on 25 August 2020, was designed to get your feedback to help shape the vision for your town and what will be included in the Town Investment Plan. We'd like to thank everyone who completed the survey. The Town Deal Investment Plans for West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis are still being drafted and your comments will be taken on board and reflected in the submission.

What's next?
Once the data has been analysed, we will share our project shortlist where we will be asking you to comment on these projects.

#MyTown

#MyTown was launched by Government to allow members of the public to make suggestions and submit ideas for West Bromwich, Smethwick and Rowley Regis. You can visit MyTown to read the suggestions made when the project was first announced.

Governance

We have established a Super Board comprising a wide range of key stakeholders from community, business, voluntary, public-sector and faith organisations. It is chaired by Jude Thompson, President of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and the board will make sure that Sandwell's three bids are complementary. You can view the latest information from the Sandwell Super Board meetings here.

We have established three Local Boards, one per town, to develop a series of proposals for funding. The proposals will be contained in a Town Investment Plan (TIP). We will submit the Town Investment Plans by early 2021.
