Legal and Governance

What we do

Legal

Provide legal advice, assistance and representation (acting on behalf of someone) on a wide range of legal specialism that apply to local government.  We have four areas of specialisms, social care, litigation, commercial and property.

 

Governance

Provide a wide range of services supporting democracy (equal say) in Sandwell, both with elections and the decision making process, provide support for councilors and provides guidance on information management within the Council.


Registration of births, deaths and marriages

You can learn how to:-

  • produce a birth, marriage and/or death certificate
  • register a birth and a notice of marriage
  • manage a reception area
  • conduct and organise a wedding ceremony
  • work within an administration office
  • complete a nationality checking service
  • organise and conduct a citizenship ceremony (for new British citizens)

 

Administration of funerals and memorials

You can learn how to:-

  • book a burial and/or a cremation service
  • prepare paperwork for a funeral service
  • help families choose a memorial and process the order
  • work within a general office

 

Legal administration

You can learn how to:-

  • open and close legal files
  • prepare documents for court
  • conduct legal research
  • produce a contract

 

Committee administration

You can learn :-

  • how Governance Services fits into the overall Council structure;
  • about the role of councillors;
  • about Council decision making;
  • the importance of decision making;
  • how to prepare agendas and minutes of a meeting.

 

Elections

You can learn how:-

  • to compile and maintain the voters list (register of electors)
  • the public register to vote
  • we engage with local community groups, schools, faith organisations etc., to encourage registration and voting
  • we maintain our polling districts, places and stations within the Borough
  • we organise elections from appointing staff, booking polling venues, through to counting the votes
