Homes that meet people's needs
Sandwell's population is growing. People need quality housing that fits their individual requirements. We will strive to meet their needs in a number of ways. We will encourage new building by identifying suitable sites and ensuring new homes are built to high standards. We will build our own council houses and we will encourage housing associations and commercial housebuilders to construct more affordable homes for rent or purchase.
We will make better use of existing houses so that, for example, large families are not cramped in small houses while single people live alone in three or four-bedroomed properties. We will also continue our programme to modernise all council houses to the national Decent Homes standard and do what we can to improve those homes in the private sector occupied by vulnerable people.
We will develop more extra care housing schemes and older people's villages that offer an alternative to residential care.
More people and families will be able to choose to live in, and close to, West Bromwich town centre. A mix of 70 private and affordable homes - set in attractive green public space - is at the heart of the £20 million Eastern Gateway development around Overend Street. Work is due to start in 2011. The first 86 of 450 new homes are already up on the Lyng next to the town centre. New housing will also be built in Claypit Lane, Coppice Street and Wattle Road in Greets Green to meet local demand.
What will we do?

We have clear plans for the future in this area. Our aim is to continue to develop the things that we do on your behalf so that you, as residents, feel the benefit. Find out more about what we will do.
