Changing NHS, improving health

School pupil with his school meal

The Government is changing the NHS so family doctors buy care for patients and councils take on public health duties. We will work with GPs and other partners to boost access to health services, especially for people with a learning disability or mental health need, and improve results for them.

Health and social care staff need to work together so people receive a single service and are not confused. We aim to work with partners to tackle the things that lead to poorer health (bad housing, smoking etc) and encourage people to choose healthier lifestyles.

A healthy start in life for Sandwell's babies and children is important. This means tackling low birth weight, discouraging mums-to-be from smoking, promoting breastfeeding and immunisation, and discouraging unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Our work with free school meals is important to our efforts to improve children's health.
