Housing Benefit
Anyone who pays rent to the Council, a Private Landlord or an Housing Association can make a claim for Housing Benefit.
Housing Benefit is a means tested benefit, which is paid to people to help with their rent payments.
Anyone who is liable to pay rent or Council Tax and is receiving Income Support, Income Based Job Seekers Allowance or is on a low income should make a claim.
Entitlement is based on the amount of rent/Council Tax charged, your personal income and circumstances and the circumstances of anyone living in your household.
You cannot claim Housing Benefit if:
- you own the property that you live in
- you pay rent to a close relative who lives in the same household
- you and your partner have more than £16,000 in savings or capital unless you are in receipt of pension credit guarantee.
Council Tax Benefit
Anyone who is liable for paying Council Tax to Sandwell Council and resident in the property can make an application for Council Tax Benefit.
Council Tax Benefit is a means tested benefit, which is paid to people to help pay their Council Tax.
You cannot claim Council Tax Benefit if:
- you do not live in the property where Council Tax is being charged
- you or your partner have more than £16,000 in savings or capital unless you are in receipt of pension credit guarantee.
Second Adult Rebate
Second Adult Rebate is another way you may be able to get help with paying your Council Tax. It is not based on the money you have , but on the money people who live with you have
You may be able to get Second Adult Rebate if there are other people in your home who are on a low income or on Income Support.
In order to be classed as a "second adult", the other person or non dependant, must not be:
- liable to pay Council Tax at the property
- a joint owner or tenant with you
- your married or unmarried partner
- living with more than one person who is liable for Council Tax
