Day care services and day opportunities

Day care services or day opportunities are health, social care or leisure services that help you keep active, learn skills and maintain friendships and social contacts.

Activities are many and varied but can include arts and crafts, gardening, using computers for learning, outings in the community and other group activities.

There are day centres and day services run by the council and other organisations.

Some day care services or day opportunities are for people with mental health needs, learning disabilities and/or physical disabilities.

You may be able to use a personal budget and direct payments to go out and take part in community activities or to employ a personal assistant to help you do this.

Sandwell Leisure Trust run activities in their leisure centres which may be suitable for people with disabilities and older people. Visit the Sandwell Leisure Trust website for more information.

Who do I contact?

You can contact Sandwell Council ASSIST who will support and advise you on the options open to you. They will carry out an assessment of your needs to find out what services will be suitable for you. They can direct you to other day services in Sandwell. You can also look at our directory of care and community services, Information Point.

Is there a charge?

There may be a charge for some of these services, depending on the amount of service received and individual need and financial circumstances. This will form part of the assessment. You can find out more about this in our section on paying for non-residential care services.
