Sandwell Carers' Strategy

We have been consulting on our new plan for delivering services for carers in Sandwell.  The consultation has now closed however you can find out more about the consultation here.

Are you a carer?

Do you give help and support to a friend, relative or neighbour who is finding it hard to manage at home?

If so, you may be classed as a "carer" and there may be services that can help you in this caring role.

Some people become carers over a period of time. They do more and more for the person they care for. Other people can be suddenly thrust into the caring role as the result of an incident that may involve hospital care.

Many people do not think of themselves of themselves are carers, and miss out on the support that is available.

Getting help and support

Caring for someone will have an effect on you and other family members. Struggling to cope alone can have an impact on your health and make it more difficult for you to give the care needed.

The Council has a responsibility to support you in your caring role. You are entitled to a carer's assessment from us, so that we can find out what support you need and what services are available to help you. There is also a one-off grant payment for carers.

Services available for carers

You can receive some services to support carers by contacting them yourself. Other services can only be obtained after an assessment has been carried out.

There are many different types of services that you may wish to use.You can find out more about the services available for carers in our booklet Sandwell Carer's Guide.

Carer's Emergency Card

If you are a carer and are concerned about what would happen to the person you care for if you fell ill suddenly, or had an accident, you may want to apply for a Carer's Emergency Card.
