Business rates

Business Rates (National Non-Domestic Rates - NNDR) is a property tax on non-domestic property. It is collected by billing authorities and paid into a central pool.

The proceeds are redistributed to billing authorities and major precepting authorities. Sandwell's share of redistributed rate income, together with income from its council taxpayers, revenue support grant provided by the government and certain other sums, is used to pay for the services provided.

The amount payable is calculated by reference to the rateable value, which applies to the property, multiplied by the national non-domestic rating multiplier (the rate in the pound) adjusted by transitional relief where applicable.
