Garden waste

Your garden waste must be kept separate from your other rubbish or recycling as the garden waste collected across Sandwell is composted and turned into a soil conditioner called CARE compost.

What can I put in my garden waste bin?

As all of the garden waste collected is composted, only green organic waste will be collected.

Materials That Can Be Collected:

  • grass cuttings
  • hedge and shrub clippings
  • plants and weeds
  • leaves, twigs and bark
  • cut flowers
  • windfalls
  • pot plant compost.

Please do not put any other materials in your garden waste wheeled bin. If there are other materials in your bin it will not be emptied and you will need to remove the other materials before your next collection. This is because if we empty bins with other materials into our garden waste vehicle then the whole vehicle load cannot be composted.

Materials That Cannot Be Collected:

  • soil, turf, ash or garden chemicals
  • plastic (including bin liners, carrier bags or plant pots)
  • food or kitchen waste (including raw or cooked food)
  • stones or rubble
  • DIY rubbish, timber or sawdust
  • animal waste or bedding
  • metal or glass.

When is my garden waste wheeled bin collection?

The fortnightly collection garden waste collection service now continues throughout the year.

There is only a two week break over Christmas and New Year.
